Probate Court business review

Probate Business Review

Dora Clarke , solicitor with Withers
(taken from Issue No 14 -  January 2001)

The Review is part of the ‘Modernising the Civil Courts’ programme which generally is looking at the way in which the civil courts deliver their business with a view to outlining the areas where clear benefits could be made to the services offered through embracing new technology or by modernising systems. The aim of the Probate Business Review is to look at how the Probate Service works at present and to consider how service delivery could be improved - it is purely looking at the administrative side and not at any legal changes, e.g. not the extension of those entitled to apply for a Grant of Probate via the postal system.

The Probate Review Project Board was set up in May 2000 and is going to be appointing consultants to:-

1.          Define a future customer service strategy
2.          Consider ‘best value’ options
3.          Consider opportunities for new electronic services
4.          Review accommodation requirements
5.          Review staff deployment
6.          Consider proposals for a structure for the 21st century
7.          Consider the impacts and risks of all proposals

A consultant is due to be appointed in early 2001 as a result of putting out to tender.

There will be a review period through the second quarter of 2001 with the report/recommendations due to be published in the summer of 2001.

This is at a very early stage but the court is keen to get feedback from users of the probate services and anyone who wishes to be kept informed or make a contribution should contact the Probate Review Communications Manager at the address below.
